Dear
parents & students,
Thank you for the marvelous gathering on Friday, 16 June. Thanks
to everyone who brought food and drinks, who helped to grill
the hot dogs, and who set-up and cleared-up after the function.
It was an excellent end to another cycle. The students gave
an impressive demonstration, and I am glad that everyone had
a good time mingling, while savouring freshly grilled hot
dogs.
Grateful thanks, also, to the staff at Gordon Head Recreation
Centre and Gordon Head School; particularly Principal Brent
Kelly of Gordon Head School, and Diane Andiel, Jennifer Halfhide,
and Jason Jones of the recreation centre.
Since the last Newsletter, we were able to add an Advanced
Class for the children, on Thursdays at 5pm. And as Gordon
Head Elementary transitions into a Middle School, not only
was it the first public school in Victoria to offer Aikido,
Gordon Head School will be the first public middle school
to have an Aikido Club managed by students. It will be a great
learning opportunity for the students; to hone their management
and leadership skills. Congratulations.
As
we go through another summer, classes will continue, along
with the Aikido Warriors' Camp. I am looking forward to practising
with you, and bringing you to the next level of Aikido practice.
In
harmony,
Rafael Oei Sensei.

The
next Grading Tests will be held during the week of August 28.
Those
eligible for the coming Grading Tests will be invited to register
by mid-August.
Apart
from regular attendance records, please be reminded that a student's
attitude, skills and knowledge are continually assessed during regular
classes. So having met the minimum hours required is not the only
criteria to qualify for Grading, nor is a student's performance totally
based on the test day.

There
have been instances where classes were full, but the class lists reflected
only a handful of students.
The recreation centre requires that all students be accounted for
from the first lesson of each cycle.
To
comply with this, and as our Aikido programme is on-going, all members
of our dojo will be pre-registered for each new cycle; unless otherwise
advised by the student and/or their parents.
Alternatively,
post-dated cheques may be submitted to me or Mrs. Oei (Kathy).
The cheques are to be made payable to "Corporation of the District
of Saanich".
These will be handed over to the centre's Programme Director.
Currently,
students are reminded to register for each new cycle two weeks before
the end of each cycle.
Typically, a cycle lasts two months, with Grading Tests four times
a year.

Aikido
Warrior Camps 2006
The camps will be held at the Gordon Head Recreation Centre
once again.
July 10 to 14, 9am to 4pm.
(As of June 22, only 2 spaces left.)
August
21 to 25, 9am to 4pm.
(As
of June 22, only 5 spaces left.)
As usual, we will begin each day with a jog around Lambrick Park,
so do bring along your jogging outfits, and your Dogi (practice uniform),
for the classes that follow.
Do remember to bring along your lunch, and I suggest plain water in
a water bottle.
We
will be practising bokken and jo during the camp, so please bring
them along if you have them. If you do not have a bokken or a jo,
these will be available at the camp - you are not required to purchase
them for the camp.
Space
is limited. If you would like to join us for the week-long camp, register
soon.
Please register with the Gordon Head Recreation Centre, Tel: 475-7100,
or register online http://www.saanich.ca
(RecOnline).
