As we renew ourselves, especially today being Chinese New Year, let us remind ourselves to practice breathing deeply from our centre. Breathe deep cleansing breaths to and from this point deep within the stomach area. Move from this point, and reflect on this point, where the Obi of your belt normally rests. To be aware of this point, as you breathe into your stomach, push against the Obi. As you exert yourself, move, or speak, push against the Obi once again.
Maintaining this central awareness as you inhale and exhale, try to extend the flow beyond the breath, and let it expand to surround you. That is you, generating Ki, or Chi. During your classes, try to move and execute your techniques from this point which lies around the waist and the hip. As you turn or move, focus away from your shoulders and chest onto this point lower down. Pin, throw, and roll from this point, and let the energy come from here. You will find yourself being able to last longer with renewed vigour. As you live your daily life, try to maintain a slight focus on this same point. Walk from here, talk from here, meet every situation from here, and see how that changes your perspective. Laugh heartily from this point, and greet everyone with a smile that originates from deep within this centre. Then share the peace and joy that abounds from this centre. I wish you peace, happiness, prosperity and success in the coming year. Gong Xi Fa Cai! In peace and harmony,Rafael Oei Sensei. (© Copyright February 2008: Rafael Oei) |
