"The true meaning of the term SAMURAI
is one who serves and adheres to the power of love."

O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba

This reflection is on the word "samurai". Often, it conjures up ideas of heroic warriors who are thought to be first rate fighters. Due to popular samurai television programmes, children tend to think about these romantic figures of Japanese history who roam the land and indulge in fearless combat as invincible and proud fighters.

O Sensei reminds us about Budo and the term "samurai". It is a familiar notion that is echoed in another saying: "To be master of all, one has to be a servant of all." O Sensei reminds us about humility, of harmony, and of what it means to be a true warrior. It is similar to the idea of chivalry and the knights of old. Musashi, the great Japanese swordsman, was also known to be an artist, leaving behind a small legacy of statues and paintings. Reflect on the words and apply it to your practice of Aikido in daily life.
