"When you bow deeply to the universe,
it bows back..."

O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba

O Sensei's quote makes a profound statement about appreciation.  To bow is an act of dignity and honour.  In Aikido, we bow face down in total trust and humility.  Giving without reservation and receiving with gratitude.

Bowing conveys respect and appreciation.  It is difficult to perform a sincere bow without having it originate from the heart.  When a bow is performed sincerely to another, it goes beyond the physical facade of the person.  It acknowledges the inner essence of the other.  Performing a bow to another is never embarrassing if done sincerely.

Conveying heartfelt appreciation amplifies the thing that is being appreciated.  That is why we are reminded to be thankful for everything that we have received.  It is also the reason why we give positive strokes (appreciation and reinforcement) to nurture attributes, behaviour, and habits we want in our children.

I remain constantly grateful to you for joining me on this profound journey of Aikido.  Thank you, parents and students, for all your support, respect, encouragement, and the giving of your time to explore, study, and practice the discipline and way of Aiki.

Have a most blessed and meaningful Thanksgiving.

In peace and harmony,
Rafael Oei Sensei.
